Shockwave Therapy at Oakwood Physiotherapy
What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic energy to stimulate healing. It is widely recognised as one of the most effective solutions for chronic pain and stubborn musculoskeletal problems. Patients often turn to shockwave therapy when traditional physiotherapy or medication has not brought lasting relief.
Conditions treated with shockwave include:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Tennis or golfer’s elbow
- Achilles tendonitis
- Shoulder pain and impingement
- Sciatica and low back pain
- Tendinopathy and tendonosis
- Osteoarthritis
- Calcifications and scar tissue
- Muscular knots and spasms
By stimulating the body’s own repair mechanisms, shockwave therapy can restore movement, reduce pain, and prevent long-term deterioration.
Focused vs. Radial Shockwave Therapy
Although both focused and radial shockwave therapy use acoustic waves to stimulate healing, they act differently within the body. This allows us to choose the right type—or often a combination—for your specific condition.
Radial Shockwave
- Superficial treatment depths (3–5 cm)
- Localised and chronic pain
- Large muscle groups
- Plantar fasciitis and heel spurs
- Calcific shoulder tendinopathy
- Myofascial pain & trigger points
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Trochanteric pain & ITB issues
- Patellofemoral pain
- Tennis elbow & bursitis
Focused Shockwave
- Deep-seated tissues (up to 12.5 cm)
- Diffuse pain and acute pain
- Insertional tendinopathies
- Bone stress injuries & non-unions
- Osteoarthritis
- Spinal facet joint pain
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Erectile dysfunction & CPPS
- Wound healing
- Morton’s neuroma & peripheral neuropathy
How Shockwave Therapy Works
When acoustic shockwaves pass through the skin, they trigger a biophysical process called neovascularisation—the growth of new blood vessels. This improves circulation, which increases oxygen and nutrient supply to damaged tissues.
As a result, the body enters a cycle of:
- Cell regeneration
- Collagen production
- Tissue remodelling
- Long-term healing
Shockwave therapy can also break down calcifications, scar tissue, and inflammatory waste products that interfere with normal tissue function. Although symptoms sometimes flare up before improving, this is a natural part of the healing response. Most patients notice significant progress within weeks.
Shockwave with EMTT and MBST
At Oakwood, shockwave therapy is rarely used in isolation. Instead, we integrate it with other cutting-edge technologies to maximise results.
Shockwave + EMTT
Extracorporeal Magnetotransduction Therapy (EMTT) works on a cellular level, enhancing metabolic activity and energy transfer. When combined with shockwave therapy, the two treatments complement each other—shockwave stimulates mechanical healing, while EMTT boosts deep cellular recovery. Together, they accelerate repair and reduce the risk of recurrence.

Shockwave + MBST
Magnetic Resonance Therapy (MBST) targets degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis and disc problems. Used alongside shockwave therapy, MBST supports long-term regeneration of cartilage and bone tissue. This dual approach not only addresses pain but also works to slow or even reverse the underlying cause.
By offering shockwave therapy in conjunction with EMTT and MBST, we create tailored treatment plans that go beyond symptom relief, aiming for real structural change and long-lasting results.

How We Use Both at Oakwood
At Oakwood Physiotherapy, we don’t treat shockwave as “one size fits all.” Radial shockwave is excellent for surface-level muscular pain and widespread tissue problems. Focused shockwave targets deeper or more complex injuries such as osteoarthritis or non-healing fractures.
Often, we use both approaches together—and combine them with EMTT or MBST—to deliver faster healing and longer-lasting results.
